The 5 Most Common Indoor Molds
Mold is everywhere—its airborne spores can enter your home through open doors and windows, on your clothing or your pet’s fur, and even through your HVAC vents. When those spores find a warm, damp place to grow, you could end up with mold in your home. But what types of household mold are dangerous? Today we’ll go over the most common indoor molds and the effects they can have on your health.
The Five Most Common Indoor Molds
1: Cladosporium
Most commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, this type of mold loves to eat wallpaper. It doesn’t usually cause illness, but it’s far from harmless. Cladosporium can trigger asthma symptoms, and frequent exposure could also cause skin, eye, or sinus infections.
2: Penicillium
This type of mold likes to grow on fabrics and on spoiled food. If you’ve ever found a fuzzy lemon in the bottom of your fridge, you were most likely looking at penicillium. Even though this mold can make powerful antibiotics, many people are allergic to it.
3: Aspergillus
This super common fungus tends to grow in basements, HVAC systems, and houseplant soil. Other molds often grow along with it, making it even more dangerous to allergy sufferers. And, people with lung conditions or compromised immune systems could get aspergillosis, a respiratory infection.
4: Stachybotrys
This notorious type of mold often grows on drywall, a prevalent building material found in most homes and office buildings. Also known as “black mold,” this mold has a reputation for being dangerous, even though many other types of toxigenic mold are equally harmful. The bottom line is, if you have stachybotrys, get rid of it!
5: Alternaria
Another allergy irritant, alternaria spores travel into your home from outside and spread through the HVAC system. This mold can be found almost everywhere—it can grow in any damp textiles (including paper), in plant soil, on spoiled food, and anywhere else it finds enough moisture.
